Old news, still an update

Ok… I have not been very good at updating the website. Still, there is some news to share (see Twitter too..). These include:

  • Started a new project with the Police. Following their Incident Command Center during the Corona crisis
  • Had a paper published (Criminal Investigation in Rural Areas: How Police Detectives Manage Remoteness and Resource Scarcity) with Oscar Rantatalo and Ola Lindberg in Policing: A Journal of Policy and Practice (https://academic.oup.com/policing/advance-article/doi/10.1093/police/paaa023/5864506)
  • Co-convened the EGOS sub-theme on Extreme contexts.
  • Been cited, twice, in Financial Times! (https://www.ft.com/content/dcfc4718-650e-4f0d-a4cf-93d09214ffdb and https://www.ft.com/content/01fd6ad5-b062-4699-b098-ab81bdc8f7b2) 
  • Had a paper accepted with Linda Rouleau and Mark De Rond in Journal of Management Studies, related to extreme contexts
  • Launched the first Extreme Contexts virtual seminar series. Focus on COVID-19 & Extreme contexts
  • And, most importantly, hiking twice in the Swedish mountains. Once with my son! It was amazing.

Founding of Knowledge forum Region North

Recently I founded Knowledge Forum Region North together with the participating organizations (see below). The aim of the knowledge forum is to share and reflect upon experiences, knowledge, and science, to increase society´s capability to cope with extreme events. Today the Knowledge forum consists of TripleEd, the Police, the Security Police, the military, and the county administrative board of Västerbotten. As we go along other organizations and researchers will be added. Really looking forward to what this initiative may turn into. There is certainly a need for some integration and reflections for all of us. The collaboration is thus quite exciting!

Workshop on Leadership challenges associated with extreme events

There have been some developments that have not been written about… Both on a team and personal level. A major thing has been a workshop that TripleEd organized together with the Police, Security Police, the County administrative board of Västerbotten, and the defense forces –  all representing the Northern Region of Sweden.

For half a day we discussed and reflected on our different experiences of extreme events, and how they differed and was similar across the organizations. The day was organized with panel presentations, reflective team seminars, and joint discussions. Based on the feedback from the participants it was appreciated, and we all hope that we will see more of these activities and collaborations across organizations.

Research funding for a research exchange program addressing the grand challenges of today´s society

Today we received the news that we have received funding from Riksbankens Jubileumsfond for a research exchange program addressing the grand challenges of today. Please find the summary in Swedish and English below.

Sammanfattning på svenska
Programmets syfte är att skapa en plattform för samarbete samt ökad lokal exponering för internationell organisationsforskning i toppklass. Utbytet är ett led i att utveckla den teoretiska och metodologiska kompetens som stora samhällsutmaningar kräver. Nio forskare som samtliga är experter på sitt respektive område har bjudits. Varje inbjuden forskare följer förutbestämda aktiviteter kopplade till programmets övergripande syfte. Forskningsutbytet arrangeras av forskningsmiljön TripleED vid managementsektionen på Handelshögskolan, och sker i samarbete med två forskningsprofiler vid två andra institutioner på Umeå universitet.

Summary in English
The purpose of the research exchange is to create a platform for collaboration, and locally increase the exposure to international top-level organization theory research. The exchange is part of a larger strategy to develop the theoretical and methodological competence that is required to take on the grand challenges of today’s society. Nine scholars that are experts in their field are invited. Each visit will include pre-set activities associated with the purpose of the exchange program. The exchange is organized by the Extreme Environments – Everyday Decisions research environment at the management section at Umeå School of Business and Economics, Umeå university in collaboration with two research profiles at other departments on Umeå University.

WEBINARIUM 1: Från tristess till glädje för att vara engagerad på arbetet

Temat för det första webinariumet fokuserar på tristess och glädje i arbetslivet. För att starta diskussionen kommer jag att skicka ut en kort text baserad på vår forskning på Mount Everest till de tolv första skriver upp sig. Forskningen visar inte bara på att tristess finns överallt, och att en klar majoritet av alla människor upplever den – men också att hanteringen av tristess skapar förutsättningarna för att finna glädje i arbetslivet. Att finna glädjen i arbetet är i sin tur avgörande för att vara engagerad i arbetet. De möjligheter och utmaningar som omger detta är fokus för den första diskussionen. Upplägget är att efter en kort inledning delas de tolv deltagarna in i grupper om 4. Varje grupp kommer att få 10 minuter att prata om de frågor de anser relevanta. Därefter finns det möjlighet för de resterande att fråga gruppen om förtydliganden eller ställa frågor relaterat till diskussionen under fem minuter. Efter det är det dags för nästa grupp om fyra osv till alla fått “tid i strålkastarljudet”. I slutet summeras diskussionen. Upplägget syftar till att alla ska få möjlighet att ta del av varandras erfarenheter samtidigt som det blir ett tydligare samtal.
